About ALACE
Monday, 13 September 2004

The Association of Local Authority Chief Executives exists to further and defend the interests of its members by seeking, through collective action and individual support, to help them to improve their conditions of service and to protect themselves against whatever threatens the integrity, security and continuation of their role in public service.

ALACE is the trade union which represents the interests of the 400 plus chief executives of the local authorities in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. (see below).  The Council of ALACE forms the "staff side" of the Joint Negotiating Committee for Chief Executives, the body which is responsible for the salary and terms/conditions of employment for chief executives. The Association also represents the interests of its members in responding to draft legislation and regulations which affect the role of the 'head of the paid service', together with issues such as the reorganisation of local government.

At the July 2007 ALACE AGM it was decided to open up membership to Chief Officers (as defined by eligibility for SOLACE membership – existing SOLACE members and those chief officers who report directly to the chief executive); and to other agency Chief Executives connected with local government – eg regional assemblies, regional development agencies, Police Authorities and other similar bodies - as approved by ALACE Council on a case by case basis. The expanded membership takes effect from 1 October 2007.

As well as this general representative role, ALACE also supports those of its members who, for a variety of reasons, experience difficulties with their employing authorities. The Association retains three Consultants who are retired senior local authority chief executives, who 'troubleshoot' on behalf of individual members. The Association normally pays the costs incurred in such work, the volume of which has increased considerably in recent times. ALACE gets no income except from membership subscriptions. This is currently £275 a year (£300 from 1 January 2008) and the best investment you can make for your future peace of mind.

You are welcome to browse the website and contact us if you have any enquiries.

I do hope you decide to apply for membership.
